There were 18.2 million Americans — 6.3 percent of the population — with diabetes in 2002, and it is the nation's fifth-deadliest disease, says the American Diabetes Association

Women in the study who drank at least one sugar-sweetened soda a day were 85 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who drank less, said Matthias B. Schulze, who presented the Harvard School of Public Health research at the American Diabetes Association's 64th scientific sessions.

In addition to the sodas' excess calories, their large amount of rapidly absorbable sugars could contribute to obesity and a greater risk of diabetes, 부산출장샵 - https://www.opanma.com/9-busan said Schulze, a post-doctorate student from Germany.

"It's not that sugar everywhere is important, but it seems that sugar specifically in liquid foods may be relevant," Schulze said. "So, sodas and other energy-providing drinks may lead to an over-consumption of energy that would lead to obesity and weight gain."

Diet sodas with sugar substitutes, however, did not increase the chances of developing diabetes, Schulze - http://www.travelwitheaseblog.com/?s=Schulze said. He added that the women who drank diet sodas tended to lose weight.

Diabetes is an illness that develops, often in middle age, when a body loses the ability to turn blood sugar into energy. There were 18.2 million Americans — 6.3 percent of the population — with diabetes in 2002, and it is the nation's fifth-deadliest disease, says the American Diabetes Association.

Worse yet, diabetes is a growing problem. The prevalence of diabetes was fairly flat during the 1980s, but nearly doubled from 1990 to 2002.

According to Schulze's study, the women most prone to gaining weight had increased their consumption of sugary soft drinks from less than one a week to more than one a day. On average, those women gained 9-10 pounds in a four-year period. But women who cut their intake of soft drinks gained an average of 3 pounds or less.

The research followed more than 91,000 adult women over an eight-year period. It is part of the Nurses Health Study at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The research comes two months after the release of a British study showing school programs - http://realitysandwich.com/?s=school%20programs that discouraged drinking sodas appeared to be effective in reducing obesity among children.

Mike Jacobsen, executive director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest consumer advocacy group, said he wasn't surprised by the study's findings — but he was pleased.

"It provides ammunition for education efforts, labeling changes and restricting soft drink consumption in schools," Jacobsen said.

The National Soft Drink Association labeled the study as "unconvincing and inconclusive," because it has yet to be peer-reviewed and raises questions over factors that could create inaccuracies.

Schulze acknowledged the study's limitations in that its data came from observations, such as body weight the women themselves reported.

The study was conducted and financed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and released in New Orleans at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

03314949=25668721]" style="max-width:440px;float:left;padding:10px 10px 10px 0px;border:0px;">Whether the treatment can help cure brain cancer remains to be seen, but the approach at least seems to slow the often rapid progression of the disease for some.

The treatment, tested in a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme, involves the drug Temodar. Until now, the medicine has typically been used only after radiation to shrink the tumor.

A major international study released Monday shows that giving low doses of the capsule at the very start - for six or seven weeks during and after radiation - doubles the chance of being alive two years later.

"This is the first trial that has been clearly positive in brain cancer in 30 years," said Dr. M.J. van den Bent of the Daniel den Hoed Oncology Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. "This is a great day."

Radiation and surgery are the first-line treatments for glioblastomas, but even with them the disease usually kills within a year or less. Intravenous chemotherapy available since the 1970s improves these odds only marginally and can have serious side effects.

Several doctors predicted that upfront Temodar will quickly become the new standard of care, routinely offered to all victims of this disease.

"To be able to tell people they may have two or three years of survival rather than nine months is pretty major," said Dr. Adam Mamelak of City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, Calif., who was not involved in the study.

The study was conducted and financed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and released in New Orleans at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. It was done at more than 80 hospitals in Europe, Canada and Australia.

The study's director, Dr. Roger Stupp of University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, said patients found the drug easy to take, and fatigue was the most common ill effect.

"We have started with the most malignant - http://mommysavers.com/?s=malignant and devastating form" of brain cancer, he said. The next step will be to try the drug against less aggressive tumors and combine it with the newer, so-called targeted drugs designed to block cancer's internal growth signals.

Unlike most cancer, which kills by spreading through the body, glioblastomas grow quickly inside the head, destroying everything in their path. They are the most aggressive of the 100 or so forms of cancer that originate in the brain, and they account for half or more of all cases. Around the world, 175,000 cases are diagnosed annually, killing 125,000.

In the new study, 거제출장마사지 - https://www.anmastar.com/%ea%b1%b0%ec%a0%9c%ec%b6%9c%ec%9e%a5%ec%83%b5%c... 573 patients were randomly given standard treatment with or without early Temodar. After two years, 26 percent receiving Temodar were still alive, compared with just 10 percent getting the usual care.

Even with the treatment, most patients died quickly. Nevertheless, doctors said doubling short-term survival is an important milestone in such a grim disease.

"Twenty-six percent survival is not that great in the large scheme of things. But it is still progress," said Dr. Frank Haluska of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Until now, chemotherapy has also not had an important role in treating prostate cancer, which is much more common. At the meeting Monday, other researchers released details of studies that led the Food and Drug Administration last month to approve use of Taxotere, a standard chemotherapy drug, for men with advanced cases of this malignancy.

Before these studies, no treatment had been found to improve survival in prostate cancer. Spreading cancer can be suppressed with hormone treatment, but eventually this approach fails, and patients typically die within a year.

Two large studies released at the meeting show that Taxotere can improve survival in these men by a median of about two months, although some lived several years while on the drug.

"This is reason for celebration, because there is a survival advantage, and there is also reason for optimism, but we have a long way to go in these patients," said Dr. Mario Eisenberger of Johns Hopkins University, who headed one of the studies.

The study helps explode the myth that ovarian cancer is a silent killer, said Dr

The three symptoms are among many that have been associated with ovarian cancer before. But because they also affect most healthy women at some point in their lives, they are often not seen as a tip-off to cancer.

The lack of clearly identifiable symptoms has contributed to the relatively poor prognosis for women with ovarian cancer. While cure rates are high when the disease is detected early, about 75 percent of women are diagnosed when the cancer is in advanced stages.

Nearly 26,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and more than 16,000 will die from it, the American Cancer Society estimates - http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Society%20estimates .

The new study may help narrow the list of symptoms that might signal a need for further tests, said lead author 제주출장마사지 - https://www.anmapop.com/%EC%A0%9C%EC%A3%BC%EC%B6%9C%EC%9E%A5%EC%83%B5%CF... Dr. Barbara Goff, a gynecologic cancer specialist at the University of Washington.

All three symptoms were found in 43 percent of women later diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but in just 8 percent of women without the disease.

Women with ovarian cancer also were more likely than others to report that symptoms began within the preceding several weeks rather than several months or years earlier. Their symptoms also were more likely to be severe and to occur as often as every day or most days.

The cluster of symptoms occurred in women with early-stage disease and in those with more advanced cases. They also occurred in women who had non-cancerous ovarian tumors, so their presence did not necessarily signal a dire diagnosis, Goff said.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study helps explode the myth that ovarian cancer is a silent killer, said Dr. Ed Partridge, a gynecologic cancer specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Even women in early stages of the disease had symptoms, he said.

Doctors who suspect ovarian cancer often order ultrasound or blood tests first. But the only definitive way to diagnose the disease is surgery.

The three symptoms, if recent and persistent, should indicate to doctors that these women "have to be evaluated instead of just giving them relief for bloating or saying, `That's normal,"' said Dr. Carmen Rodriguez of the American Cancer Society.

The study is based on surveys of 1,709 cancer-free women and 128 women awaiting surgery for pelvic tumors including ovarian cancer.

A JAMA editorial said the study still leaves doctors uncertain about exactly when to order diagnostic tests.

Testing only women with the three symptoms cited would still miss a considerable number of women with cancer, Drs. Mary Daly and Robert Ozols of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia wrote.

"Based on these data, there is no way to avoid the conclusion that early diagnosis of ovarian cancer must rely on the elusive practice of clinical judgment," they said.

"Lost" star Evangeline Lilly says she has some bad memories from her time on the hit ABC series

"Lost" star Evangeline - http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=star%20Evangeline Lilly says she has some bad memories from her time on the hit ABC series. During a new interview on a podcast, the actress said that she felt "cornered" into doing a scene partially naked. She said that when she was talked into undressing onscreen against her will a second time, 포항출장마사지 - https://po872.com/ she told the show's producers "no more."

Lilly shared her traumatic story with the hosts of the "Lost Boys" podcast, which is dedicated to rewatching the hit show that ran from 2004 to 2010.

"In Season 3, I'd had a bad experience on set with being basically cornered into doing a scene partially naked, and I felt I had no choice in the matter," Lilly recalled. "I was mortified and I was trembling, and when it finished I was crying my eyes out and had to go on and do another very formidable and strong scene immediately after."

Lilly said in Season 4, she felt taken advantage of again during a partially nude scene.

"In Season 4, another scene came up where Kate was undressing and I fought very hard to have that scene be under my control and I failed to control it again," she said. "And so I then said, 'That's it, no more. You can write whatever you want—I won't do it. I will never take my clothes off on this show again.' and I didn't."

She also said that she clashed with writers and producers over the storyline of her character, Kate. She was especially annoyed by Kate's love triangle with Jack and Sawyer.

"I wanted her to be better, because she was an icon for strength and autonomy for women, and I thought we could have done better than that," said Lilly.

ABC declined to comment.

Lilly is not the only actress who has spoken out recently about a negative experience shooting a nude scene. In December, Salma Hayek said Harvey Weinstein pressured her into doing a nude scene for her film, "Frida," which she was starring in and producing. She said, "My body wouldn't stop crying and convulsing," while shooting the scene.

Last February, Debra Messing said that while shooting an unexpected nude scene she did not want to do for 1995 film "A Walk in the Clouds," director Alfonso Arau said, "Your job is to get naked and say the lines. That's it. You should be grateful to have this part."

Kelly, who was known as "Mac Daddy," performed alongside Chris Smith, who was known as "Daddy Mac." Dupri was among those in the music industry paying tribute to Kelly after hearing the news last week

Mourners are set to gather for the funeral of former Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly in Atlanta.

Kelly's funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church. The 34-year-old wasfound dead May 1 of a suspected drug overdose.

Kriss Kross was introduced to the music world in 1992 by music producer-rapper Jermaine Dupri after he discovered the pair at a mall in southwest Atlanta - http://www.usatoday.com/search/southwest%20Atlanta/ . Kelly, who was known as "Mac Daddy," performed alongside Chris Smith, 대전출장마사지 - https://www.opanma.com/11-daejeon who was known as "Daddy Mac."

Dupri was among those in the music industry paying tribute to Kelly after hearing the news last week. In an online post, he wrote, "To the world Chris was MacDaddy but to me, he was a son I never had. As much as you may think I taught him, he taught me. God has blessed me to be in the presence of so many naturally talented people, and Chris was one...When I think about it, I spent more time with Chris and Chris than damn near anybody in my whole life."

The members of Kris Kross wore their clothes backward as a gimmick, but they won over fans with their raps.

The group's first, and by far most successful song, was the 1992 hit "Jump," which became a No. 1 smash in the United States and globally.

Brodie, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said that while the paper is preliminary, "what is interesting is they're showing that patients can actually get (gene) amplification as the tumor progresses

10 (45452758/097461" style="max-width:410px;float:left;padding:10px 10px 10px 0px;border:0px;">"Cancer is a moving target, and the oncologist - http://www.covnews.com/archives/search/?searchthis=oncologist has to know which bullet to put in his gun," said Dr. Jonathan Uhr of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Extra copies of the gene HER-2 occur in 20 percent to 25 percent of breast cancer cases. In these cases the cancer tends to resist chemotherapy and radiation, but the drug Herceptin, which blocks the gene, can help patients.

The primary tumor in breast cancer patients is tested for the HER-2 gene over-activity and those with negative tests don't get Herceptin.

In some cases, however, cancer cells circulating in the blood can develop this gene overactivity as the disease progresses, according to the study by a research team Uhr led.

The study, 김포출장마사지 - https://www.anmapop.com/%ea%b9%80%ed%8f%ac%ec%b6%9c%ec%9e%a5%ec%83%b5%cf... published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found HER-2 overactivity in nine of 24 patients whose primary cancer initially tested negative for the gene.

While the study is small and further research is needed, the findings call into question the assumption that test results on the primary tumor should be used to make treatment decisions at a later date, the researchers say.

"Cancer cells are genetically unstable - http://search.about.com/?q=genetically%20unstable and they do change," Uhr, a professor of microbiology and internal medicine, said in a telephone interview.

"Of course this is against current dogma. I'm sure there will be some reluctance in accepting this until more work is done, and more work should be done," he added.

Dr. Joseph Geradts of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., said the finding "adds to the evidence that what the oncologist treats is different from what the surgeon cuts out."

The dogma has been that what is in the primary tumor is the same as what is in the cancer that spreads to other areas, Geradts said, but the new study indicates that may not be the case.

Dr. Stephen B. Edge, medical director of the breast center at Roswell Park, called the study "a small step ... but intriguing."

Angela H. Brodie, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said that while the paper is preliminary, "what is interesting is they're showing that patients can actually get (gene) amplification as the tumor progresses. It would serve as a marker for further treatment, different treatment."

Uhr's team developed a sensitive blood test for overactivity of the HER-2 gene, allowing for tests of the circulating cancer cells. Even when the primary cancer is negative for HER-2 activity, some cancer cells may have the extra gene. Over time those could become dominant in the blood as chemotherapy and radiation destroy other cancer cells.

Of the nine patients in Uhr's study who showed HER-2 activity in circulating cells, one had complete remission and two had partial remission when treated with Herceptin and chemotherapy.

For the blood test to be considered worthwhile, researchers said, they also must show that therapy with Herceptin alone or with chemotherapy can cause remissions in a significant number of patients.

The research was funded by the Nasher Cancer Research Program, the Cancer Immunobiology Center and the Komen Breast Cancer Center.

Dupri and Da Brat wore their pants backward to pay homage to Kris Kross, who was known for wearing their clothes backward, but won over fans with their infectious rap hooks

ATLANTA Chris Smith remembered his Kris Kross hip-hop partner Chris Kelly Thursday as a true friend - http://www.thefashionablehousewife.com/?s=true%20friend who he's sure is in heaven now.

Smith struggled to blurt out words at the pulpit of Jackson Baptist Memorial Church at Kelly's funeral attended by some 300 friends, family and fellow entertainers

The 34-year-old Kelly, who had the 1992 hit "Jump" with Smith, was found dead May 1 of a suspected drug overdose. His mother and uncle told authorities Kelly had a history of drug abuse and experienced similar episodes in the past, according to a police report.

"It's been a struggle for me every day, but there was a peace that came over me this morning because I know he's in heaven," Smith said, as tears fell down his face.

Kelly's mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, continuously wept while she stared at her son's casket. At the beginning of the service, she pleaded for two of the deacons not to close the coffin.

"Please don't close it," she screamed. "Please don't close it on my baby."

Before the service began, Smith walked into the church alongside rapper-producer Jermaine Dupri, who discovered the 1990s teen duo, at an Atlanta mall. Smith also talked about the last time performed he and Kelly performed together at the 20th anniversary of Durpri's label, So So Def., in late February.

"We had so many memories," Smith said. "He was a true friend. He wanted to see if I was all right. So I just want to say I love you, man, and I'll miss you."

Robert Barber, who described himself as a father figure to Kelly, 양양출장안마 - https://www.opanma.com/28-yangyang1 said Kelly told him that he felt fulfilled after that performance.

"He called me and said, `Unc, I feel alive,"' Barber recalled.

All of Kelly's other family and friends from DJ Nabs to his cousin LaToya Wise also had a hard time speaking at the funeral. Each of them said it's going to take a while to cope with Kelly's loss.

"It's supposed to be a celebration, but it's tough to do that today," said Wise, who read a poem about Kelly that said he was a fearless character.

Dupri and Da Brat wore their pants backward to pay homage to Kris Kross, who was known for wearing their clothes backward, but won over fans with their infectious rap hooks.

Throughout the nearly two-hour service, numerous photos were shown behind the pulpit of Kelly posing with music legends such as Michael Jackson, Gerald Levert and Patti LaBelle.

Two of the four members of the band Xscape, sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott also performed.

"He just wanted to smile. That's all he wanted," Tamika Scott said when she arrived. "He was known to be a happy person."

Da Brat tried to speak to reporters when she arrived but stopped when she got choked up and went on into the church.

Kris Kross was introduced to the music world in 1992 by Dupri after he discovered the pair at Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta. Kelly was known as "Mac Daddy" and Smith was known as "Daddy Mac."

"Jump" was the duo's first, and by far most successful song. The hit was off their multiplatinum 1992 debut album "Totally Krossed Out," featured the two trading verses and rapping the refrain, the song's title. The duo had surprising maturity in their rap delivery, though the song was written by Dupri. It would become a No. 1 smash in the United States and globally, and one of the most popular of that year.
